A pilot project at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital (PMMH), which connects the
hospital with the Home Affairs national population register, has allowed for
the on-site registration of hospital births. This study assesses the impact of
the on-line initiative for increasing children’s access to birth certificates.
Results are assessed through comparison with the findings of a baseline survey
on coverage of social services access conducted in 2004 in Umlazi and the
catchment area of the hospital prior to the initiation of the project.
