Overview
SWFDP was established by WMO in the mid-2000’s as a longer-term programme to improve both the quality and scope of forecasts and warnings. This was to be primarily across areas of the world where there was a recognised need to accomplish this, mainly in lesser-developed countries, and particularly in those regions especially prone to meteorological hazards and meteorologicallyrelated environmental hazards, e.g. flooding. A key foundation of SWFDP has been the very successful usage of the Cascading Process, whereby forecast and warning information is disseminated in a conceptually-simple, but highly-effective, manner: see Appendix 5 for a schematic representation of this.
