The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. This consultancy is located at Headquarters in the Evaluation Office which reports directly to the Executive Director. The consultant reports to the Evaluation Manager and the Director of the Evaluation Office.
The project sought to address the threat to vulnerable communities and sectors by the impacts of an increase in frequency and intensity of extreme weather events caused by climate change due to limited technical capacity and resource availability. The objective of the project was to overcome the above barriers by promoting: i) innovative financing mechanisms to generate sustainable funding for adaptation interventions that build climate resilience; ii) demonstration of cost-effective adaptation interventions - focused on ecosystems - that protect community assets; iii) knowledge sharing at a national and regional level on innovative financing mechanisms and cost-effective adaptation approaches; and iv) mainstreaming of climate change adaptation into national and local policies and development planning. Overall, the project sought to build national capacity for climate change adaptation to increase the resilience of local communities and sectors the observed and anticipated effects of climate change.
