The aim of this assessment was to help identify areas where further support and
assistance may help Indonesia reach the target agreed at the UN General
Assembly Special Session on Children in May 2002 to achieve the sustainable
elimination of vitamin A deficiency by 2010. In addition, such achievements in
VAS coverage will also contribute significantly to achieving the Millennium
Development Goals, specifically the reduction of child mortality. This
assessment sought to identify ways to strengthen existing delivery systems for
vitamin A supplements.
There were two main objectives for the assessment, including:
• documentation of the current system for delivering VAS in the country within
the local context, to identify its main strengths, weaknesses and constraints
• development of joint recommendations in support of country efforts to promote
and extend the use of best practices and to remove key bottlenecks to the
acceleration of progress towards high VAS coverage.
