Project/Programme 2021
Evaluation of UNICEF’s WASH programme in response to the conflict in the Eastern Ukraine (2014-2018)
Agency
United Nations Children's Fund

Overview

Since the beginning of the conflict, UNICEF has supported the efforts to ensure uninterrupted access to the safe drinking water in sufficient volume, adequate sanitation and proper hygiene for conflict-affected population. UNICEF’s WASH programmes are the largest in size and beneficiary coverage and impact on children residing on the both sides of the conflict. According to the Humanitarian Needs Overview 2019 around 3.2 million people still need assistance due to inadequate water and sanitation. The decrepit water systems are at risk of failure due to lack of maintenance, active military actions, and direct shelling of facilities. The absence of data and lack of in depth case studies on the situation of WASH services for conflict-affected people might create some gaps in humanitarian and recovery response. As the fifth year of Eastern Ukraine’s armed conflict takes its toll, the local population continues to be affected by regular on-going hostilities and its consequences with issues related to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) as ones of the most acute.
