The aim is to evaluate the implementation of BFHI programme in maternity units
in public sector health facilities in South Africa. The objectives are:
- To assess the current status of implementation of the Ten Steps to successful
breastfeeding in South Africa.
- To assess the independent contribution of pre-, peri- and post-natal support
on breastfeeding outcomes within the health facilities and at community level.
- Assess and document infant feeding practices of mothers during postnatal care
visits to health facilities.
- Document threats and opportunities for sustainability of BFHI in South Africa.
- To document opportunities for future programmatic integration between BFHI,
KMC and PMTCT.
